Evergreen
22 March – 11 April 2024 | Gallery Anomalous
This series of paintings is an exploration into the balance of our existence and the ever-present emptiness as it reveals itself in various forms throughout our lives, from the “empty basket” of today’s consumerism to the deeper emptiness of personal loss.
In a nod to Shinto symbolism, observing the changing colours of the seasons as a metaphor for the brevity of life, the greater part of this exhibition looks to apply this same metaphor to the ‘Evergreen’ trees of Aotearoa New Zealand. The leaves are intentionally spotlit, in varying degrees of decay, as a celebration of life, against a dark background. The symbol zero serves as a placeholder between both positive and negative values, providing a singular pivot point between the two states.
